Hyderabad, Apr 6 (Reporter) Gujarat Titans cruised to a commanding seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in an IPL clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium here on Sunday, with skipper Shubman Gill's classy half-century and Sherfane Rutherford's power-packed finish complementing Mohammed Siraj's fiery four-wicket spell.
Chasing a target of 153, Gujarat overhauled the total with ease, reaching 153/3 in just 16.4 overs. Gill led the charge with a fluent 61* off 43 balls, studded with nine boundaries, while Rutherford’s unbeaten 35 off 16 balls, laced with six fours and a six, ensured a breezy finish for the visitors.
Rutherford's late blitz began in the 15th over, when he tore into Abhishek Sharma with a sequence of boundaries. He carved four consecutive fours — over extra cover, through covers, mid-wicket and point — forcing Sharma to bowl a wide out of desperation.
"Three boundaries in a row!" exclaimed the commentators as Rutherford's slog sweep in the arc sent the ball over mid-wicket.
The momentum carried into the next over as Shubman Gill played two exquisite boundaries off Zeeshan Ansari — one an inside-out chip over extra cover, the other a stylish sweep to square leg — underlining his control at the crease. In the same over, he brought up his 50 with a cut past point and raised his bat with a smile as his teammates applauded from the dugout.
Rutherford, who had been calmly assessing the bowling, then launched into Cummins in the 17th over. He first pulled a short ball into the deep mid-wicket stands for a 91-metre six that lit up the Uppal sky and followed it up with a deft glide past short third for four, leaving SRH’s hopes in tatters.
Earlier in the innings, Washington Sundar played a key supporting role with a blistering 49 off 29 balls. He was particularly severe on Simarjeet Singh in the powerplay, plundering 20 runs in the 6th over with two sixes and two fours. One audacious shuffle across to scoop a six over fine leg drew comparisons with Caribbean flair, while a classic pull over mid-on showcased his timing.
Gill, too, began assertively, lifting Mohammed Shami for two wristy boundaries in the fifth over. The duo brought up their 50-run stand in the ninth over, with Gill guiding a drag-down from Kamindu Mendis to the fine-leg fence. By then, SRH’s bowling unit had started to unravel.
Hyderabad, who opted to bat first, never recovered from Siraj’s incisive spell. He removed Travis Head in the very first over and returned later to snuff out the tail, including Aniket Verma and Simarjeet Singh in the 19th over, finishing with 4/17.
Prasidh Krishna (2/25) and Sai Kishore (2/24) lent excellent support, keeping the pressure on through the middle overs.
Despite a brief recovery led by Nitish Kumar Reddy (31) and Heinrich Klaasen (27), SRH crumbled from 100/3 to 120/6, and only a late cameo from skipper Pat Cummins (22 off 9) added respectability to their 152/8.
With this win, Gujarat Titans gather crucial momentum and climb the table with six points, while Sunrisers Hyderabad are left to reflect on yet another patchy performance, managing just one win from their five outings so far.
For some fans, the season continues to lack thrill, with one spectator remarking,
"The most boring IPL without a doubt. Not a single interesting match so far..." — but Gujarat’s clinical chase may yet be remembered for its elegance and ease.
