Mumbai, May 24 (Reporter) Ushering in a new era for Indian Test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday named Shubman Gill as the new captain of the men’s Test team, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from the format.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been appointed vice-captain ahead of the upcoming tour of England.
The announcement follows back-to-back retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket, marking the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket history. The decision to hand the reins to Gill was finalised by the senior selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar, after discussions with the BCCI.
Gill, who has been seen as the natural successor in the red-ball format, will lead the side in the five-match Test series against England starting June 20. Pant, returning from a lengthy injury layoff, will serve as his deputy in the high-profile away series.
Jasprit Bumrah, who had captained India to a memorable win in Australia earlier this year, was not considered for the leadership role due to workload management. The selectors were of the view that Bumrah may not feature in all five Tests, prompting them to look for a more consistent presence in the playing XI.
The BCCI also unveiled the squad for the England tour, with a mix of experience and youth.
India's Test tour of England will feature five matches starting on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, followed by games at Edgbaston, Birmingham (July 2–6), Lord’s, London (July 10–14), Old Trafford, Manchester (July 23–27), and concluding at The Oval, London from July 31 to August 4.
