Tbilisi, Nov 13 (Reporter) Georgia will probably hold a presidential election in January 2025, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Wednesday.
"Everything is going peacefully, the results of the elections will be summed up, a parliamentary session will be held on the 10th day, parliamentary life will begin. Then, the presidential election will be held very soon, presumably in early January, the inauguration of the president will take place," Kobakhidze told reporters.
Earlier this week, incumbent Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili called for new parliamentary elections to overcome political crisis.
Georgia held parliamentary elections on October 26. The ruling Georgian Dream party won 53.93% of the vote. While four opposition parties made it into the parliament with a collective 37.78%, they refused to recognise the outcome and demanded a fresh vote.
Zourabichvili, who has long been in confrontation with the government over its law on foreign agents and its reluctance to join the Western sanctions regime against Russia, among other policies, not only rejected the election results but also called on people to take to the streets and protest.
The due date for publication of the Georgian Central Election Commission's final protocol is November 21. The parliament must gather no later than the 10th day after its publication. If the president refuses to convene the parliament it will gather independently...////...
