Eighty four flights cancelled as dense fog envelopes north India

New Delhi, Jan 15 (Reporter) At least 84 flights got cancelled and 168 others suffered delays, while 18 long-distance trains were running late as a dense fog engulfing northern India massively affected the travel plans of commuters on Monday, officials said. Delhi airport officials said the average delay per flight was about an hour, as168 flights were delayed and 84 flights had to be cancelled. Earlier, the Delhi airport issued an advisory amid foggy conditions, advising passengers to contact the airlines before traveling, as a blanket of dense fog covered the city. As per the Rail Ministry, the adverse weather conditions have disrupted the normal functioning of train services. According to the ministry, two long-distance trains, the Nanded-Amritsar Express, and Prayagraj-Bhiwani Express, are running approximately two to two and a half hours behind schedule. Nine other trains are also experiencing delays ranging from one to one and a half hours. The trains are Saharsa-New Delhi Vaishali Express, Prayagraj-New Delhi Express, Ambedkarnagar-Katra, Pratapgarh-Delhi Junction, Chennai-New Delhi, Amritsar-Mumbai Mail, Manikpur-Nizamuddin Express, and Dibrugarh-Lalgarh Avadh Assam Express. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense to very dense foggy conditions are likely to continue over north India during the next 4-5 days. “Dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail over many parts of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from tonight to Wednesday morning, in some parts on the 17th night and 18th morning and dense fog in some parts for the subsequent two days," the weather agency said.
