Eight injured as fire breaks out in crude distillation unit in UP

Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 13 (Reporter) Eight persons were injured when a fire broke out in the crude distillation unit of Mathura refinery, official sources said here on Wednesday. The sources said that the incident took place late on Tuesday evening when the fire broke out in the crude distillation unit. Senior Manager Corporate Communication of the refinery Renu Pathak said that though the exact cause of the fire will be known only after a detailed investigation, but prima facie the cause of the fire seems to be a fault in the non return valve (NRV) in the CDU column of the atmospheric vacuum unit. She said that due to this, some hydrocarbon came out of the valve which mixed with steam and turned into a flash fire and a fire broke out. "Eight people working in the vicinity sustained burn injuries, however, there has been no damage to the plant and machinery and the activities of the refinery are continuing as usual," Renu said. The senior manager said that junior engineer (assistant) Irfan (32), shift in-charge and production manager Rajiv Kumar (33) and contractual employee Santosh (32), who sustained around 30 percent burns have been admitted to Apollo hospital. She said that manager Sameer Srivastava (57) and contractual employee Moolchand (58), who sustained less than 15 percent burn injuries, were being treated at the hospital in the refinery. "Contractual employees Satyavan (33), Harendra (26) and Mukesh (45) have been admitted to Metro Hospital in Faridabad," Renu said. A committee will be constituted to investigate the fire incident in the crude distillation unit of Mathura Refinery. The committee will be constituted on Wednesday after the arrival of a team of officials from the refinery headquarters. The Senior Manager Corporate Communication of the refinery said that there was no blast in the refinery in this fire incident as is being circulated in some media.
