Shimla, May 29(Reporter) As India nears the final phase of the staggered Lok Sabha elections, efforts to draw every eligible voter to the polling booths are on in full swing.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) and state election departments are working diligently to uphold their principle of 'No voter to be left behind,' making special provisions for senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PwD), and essential service workers.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Himachal Maneesh Garg emphasised these efforts, noting significant participation from vulnerable groups through postal ballots and home voting options.
With the state set to vote on June 1, altogether 41,252 postal ballots have been received out of 44,562 forms accepted across its four parliamentary constituencies. Additionally, 3,380 postal ballots have been cast in the simultaneous by-elections for six assembly constituencies.
Focusing on senior citizens, 29,619 voters aged 85 and above have utilised postal ballots out of 31,122 accepted forms. This highlights the success of home voting initiatives, where election officials visit senior voters at their residences to facilitate voting.
Similarly, 10,526 PwD voters have cast their franchise out of 11,007 forms received. In the essential services category, 1,107 out of 2,433 eligible voters have used postal voting centers.
Out of 2,747 forms accepted from senior voters, 2,575 have cast their votes. Among PwD voters, 772 out of 820 have voted, while 33 out of 84 essential service voters have participated through postal voting centers.
