ED arrests man accused of extortion by posing as agency officer

Kolkata, July 4 (Reporter) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested the alleged mastermind, identified as SK Jinnar Ali, accused of posing as ED officer and extorting money from businessmen and others, official sources said today. The ED arrest came following raids in Kolkata and Burdwan recently. Ali and some of his associates were taken into custody up to July 16 following a court appearance on Wednesday. The accused were involved in a criminal conspiracy to extort money from businessmen by portraying themselves as officers of ED. "Their method involved identifying certain businessmen and targeting them for extortion. Such businessmen were contacted over the phone. The accused also summoned the businessmen to appear in front of the Police Commissionerate Office, Bidhannagar, under the pretext of an official inquiry which, in reality, did not exist. To lend legitimacy to the illegal act, the accused would arrive in a Toyota Fortuner, which displayed an ED insignia," the ED said. On one occasion, the accused coerced a businessman to pay a total of Rs 1.30 crore in cash and Rs 20 lakh in the bank account of the accused, the ED said. Conman Jinnar Ali was also involved in cheating other victims by false assurances of helping in ongoing investigation cases. In one such instance, he extorted Rs.1.5 crore from the victim. The ED searches resulted in the seizure of two vehicles, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura owned in the name of Jinnar Ali and his wife. The amount to the tune of Rs. 45.89 lakh lying in the bank accounts held in his name, his wife’s name and in the name of company M/s Sparklink Management Service Private Limited has also been frozen. During the course of searches, several incriminating documents, items, and digital evidence were seized, ED said. Among the seized materials were forged letters purportedly issued by the Enforcement Directorate and other government authorities bearing fabricated seals and forged signatures. Also, multiple lanyards printed with “Government of India" were recovered from Ali's residence. A letterhead of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, bearing the name of Dr S.K. Jinnar Ali and embossed with the Ashoka emblem was also seized. Investigation also revealed that Jinnar Ali projected himself as chairman of an organization...////...
