ECI directs transfer 4 police officers in J&K ahead of Assembly polls

Srinagar, Aug 28 (Reporter) Ahead of the Assembly polls in J&K, the Election Commission of India has directed the immediate transfer of police chiefs of four districts in the union territory, top sources said. They said the move was aimed to ensuring free and fair assembly polls in J&K that are being held after a gap of 10 years. ECI sources said they have directed the UT administration to immediately transfer senior superintendents of police of the districts of Srinagar, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Handwara. They said SSP Srinagar Ashish Mishra has been relieved with immediate effect. He was transferred from J&K to Delhi Police in June 2023 but could not be relieved due to administrative reasons. Similarly, ECI has asked for the immediate transfer of SSP Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh; SP Handwara, Dawood Ayoub; and SSP Kupwara, Shobhit Saxena. The ECI has directed the UT Administration of J&K to provide a panel of India Police Service officers for the post of SSP Srinagar, Baramulla, Handwara, and Kupwara by 5 PM on Thursday. The ECI has also given the nod for IPS officer Nalin Prabhat to serve as the Director General (Operations and Security) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police until September 30. He is currently on inter-cadre deputation and posted as Special DG, J&K, till September 30, 2024. Prabat is slated to assume the role of Director General of Police on October 1, replacing Rashmi Ranjan Swain. The ECI also gave nod to the extension of inter-cadre deputation tenure of Syeed Fakhruddin Hamid, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, for a period of two years.
