ECI committed to ensure free & fair polling in Bengal

Kolkata Mar 5 (Reporter) Chief Election Commissioner of India Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday said the ECI is committed to ensuring free and fair poll across West Bengal's 42 Parliamentary constituencies and " We have zero tolerance to the violence". Addressing media after reviewing the poll preparedness and law and order situation across the state by a 13-member commission full bench since Sunday, the CEO categorically said there will be adequate Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to ensure voters are free to elect their representative in a free and fair manner. West Bengal has 7.58 crore voters, of them 3.73 crore are women electors and 1,873 transgenders. He said during the review meetings, the commission was told that there were fake and duplicate voters, which were being examined by the commission. "They will be certainly examined and the needful would be done accordingly," Kumar assured while being asked about the presence of fake and double entry voters in the electoral roll, published on January 5, 2024. He said there was a demand from a political party to conduct the poll in one phase only. He said the commission took note of the demands and a decision will be taken later. The ECI said some 80,000 polling stations are to be set up with an average of 943 voters per polling booth as over 75 percent of them are in rural areas. The ECI has directed all poll officials, district magistrates, and SPs to be impartial, transparent, and accessible to all parties equally and ensure a level playing field. " Absolute zero tolerance to any violence in democracy' CEO warned and said the elections were like a festival, which should be celebrated all across the society. The Commission emphasised the need for enforcement agencies for a coordinated approach aided by technology to curb money and muscle power and ensure a free and level playing field for all. The ECI said there will be a round-the-clock vigil on interstate and international borders as well as in all the Airports. The ECI would launch three apps. Through an app, the electors can directly complains to the Election Commission about inducements, distribution of liquor and misuse of money during elections and the matter is to be attended in 100 minutes. Chief Election Commissioner said some polling stations in West Bengal will be run entirely by women, with female security personnel deployed and Some stations will also be managed by Persons With Disabilities, aiming to set an example for society...////...
