New Delhi Jan 12 (Reporter) The Congress on Friday termed the BJP as a 'middleman' and accused the party of converting the entire religious programme of the consecration of Lord Ram in the grand temple at Ayodhya into a "political' event.
Addressing a media briefing at the AICC headquarters here, Congress leader Pawan Khera said, "The BJP is working like a middleman and I don't need a thekedar between me and my god".
He said religious seers including the Shankracharyas were of the view that the consecration of Lord Ram should be done on Ram Navami. "Who has given the right to one person to decide on which date the ceremony will take place?" Khera questioned.
"We want to know whether you are above god or hindu dharma? who are you to decide on a date and what is its significance? Which almanac have you referred to before finalising the date? It has been chosen keeping in mind the elections " the Congress leader said.
"It is not a religious event but purely a political one," Khera added.
All four Shankracharyas were sidelined because they said that consecration cannot be done in an incomplete temple, he alleged.
Stating that the Congress was not averse to the construction of the Ram Temple, Khera said the party's Uttar Pradesh unit has decided to go to Ayodhya on January 15.
He said, "We have not stopped any of our leaders from going to Ayodhya."
Replying to a question about its top leaders declining the invitation, Khera said Congress had never thought about gain or loss in elections. People's issues have always been of priority.
Supriya Shrinate, who was also present at the briefing, said when religion is a personal matter then why was it being politicised.
"We all know that all religious rituals are performed by religious seers and now all the four Shankracharyas have decided not to go for the Ram temple inauguration," she said.
She said there were several issues the country is facing that need to be highlighted, and added that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is a big step towards addressing these issues of the common man...////...
