Melbourne, Jan 19 (Reporter) Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic said his decision to skip the usual on-court post-match interview following his Australian Open victory over Czech Jiri Lehecka on Sunday was a response to insulting and offensive remarks made by a journalist from Channel Nine, the official broadcaster in Australia.
"I would like to clarify why the usual post-match interview on the court didn’t take place. A couple of days ago, a well-known sports journalist who works for the official broadcaster, Channel Nine here in Australia, made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments about me," Djokovic said.
He added that despite the controversy, neither the journalist nor Channel Nine. had issued a public apology. As a result, Djokovic opted not to give interviews to the broadcaster, though he emphasised that he held no personal grievances against the Australian public or commentator Jim Courier.
"I have nothing against Jim Courier or the Australian public. It was a very awkward situation for me to face on the court today, and it's unfortunate I felt the need to address the crowd. However, I realise it wasn't the right time or place to explain what I'm doing now," he said.
Djokovic left the matter in Channel Nine's hands, stating, "I leave it to Channel Nine to handle the situation as they see fit."
The incident continues to generate discussion as Djokovic prepares for his upcoming matches in Melbourne...////...
