Deputy LoP in Karnataka Assembly Bellad demands penalty against Infosys

Hubballi, Dec 24 (Reporter) Karnataka Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Arvind Bellad on Tuesday demanded a penalty against Infosys for failing to create the promised jobs, despite receiving subsidised land from the state government. Bellad accused the IT giant of exploiting land allocated at discounted rates in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Mangaluru without fulfilling its employment commitments. Bellad’s remarks follow a similar outcry earlier this year, when he demanded the government torevoke the 58 acres of land allocated to Infosys in Hubballi, claiming the company had not generated a single job in the region. He emphasised that the land, which was procured at a subsidised rate of Rs 35 lakh per acre—far below its actual value of Rs 1.5 crore—was given with the assurance of local job creation for farmers' children. “Infosys has engaged only in landscaping, not job creation. The firm has failed to uphold its commitments, and it’s time for the government to take action,” Bellad stated. He added in a post on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), accusing the company of acting as a real estate developer rather than fulfilling its responsibilities as an IT giant. The Deputy LoP further questioned the ethics of the land deal, pointing out that it was procured from farmers with the understanding that their children would be employed in the promised industrial developments. He argued that the government should impose penalties on Infosys for its failure to honour the land-use agreement. Karnataka’s IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge had previously suggested that incentives for companies that fail to create employment could be reconsidered, including the possibility of withdrawing benefits...////...
