Chennai, Nov 26 (Reporter)The Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal on Tuesday intensified into a Deep Depression, even as incessant rains lashed Chennai city and its neighbouring districts, while the Cauvery delta regions experienced heavy rains since this morning. Met office said the system moved north-northwestwards and lay centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal about 310 km south-southeast of Trincomalee, 590 km south-southeast of Nagapattinam, 710 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 800 km southsoutheast of Chennai. It is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a Cyclonic storm (which will be named Fengal) on Wednesday. Thereafter, it will continue to move north-northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu coast skirting Sri Lanka during the subsequent 2 days. Met office said a continuous watch was being maintained for the movement and intensification of the system towards TN-Sri Lanka coasts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the next two days and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on November 28 and heavy rainfall at isolated places on November 29. Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph is prevailing over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of EIO and southeast BoB and along and off Sri Lanka and Tamilnadu and Puducherry coasts. It is likely to increase becoming 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph over southwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Sri Lanka, Tamilnadu and Puducherry coasts from today evening and 55-65 kmph ad gusting to 75 kmph over Southwest BoB and along and off Sri Lanka, Tamilnadu and Puducherry coasts from tomorrow morning till November 29. Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea which will be rough to very rough. Meanwhile, incessant rains lashed Chennai city and its suburbs since early this morning causing inconvenience to the public. The spell was at times heavy in northern suburbs resulting in waterlogging in many areas. Office goers and school and college students were put to hardship and traffic snarls were reported in some areas as vehicles moved at snail's pace. Heavy rains also lashed the delta districts for which a Red Alert was issued for two days. Reports received here said standing paddy crops in some areas were submerged in rain waters. Schools and colleges in some of the districts were declared a holiday for the day. In a related development, Chief Minister M K Stalin reviewed the rain situation with senior officials at the State Secretariat and ensured that all precautionary measures were put in place as the Met office has forecast heavy to very heavy rains till November 29. Apart from opening relief camps, SDRF and NDRF teams were also kept in readiness in Chennnai city and neighbouring districts.
