Chennai, Nov 25 (Reporter) The Depression over the Bay of Bengal
is moving towards Tamil Nadu coast despite losing its steam and
is likely to intensify further into a Deep Depression promising very
heavy rains in the state for the next 5 days.
The Met office has issued Red alert for delta districts on Tuesday
and Wednesday, while Chennai and its adjoining districts, including
North coastal areas are expected to receive heavy rains for three
days from Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu has made all precautionary measures
to face the rains, including setting up of relief camps and deploying
SDRF and NDRF teams.
Chief Minister M K Stalin said all precautionary measures were put
in place and the District Collectors and officials were given adequate
instructions to tackle the situation.
"Even if it is vary heavy rains as forecast by the weather office, the
government is fully prepared to face it", he said.
The Depression, which was moving at a speed of 30 kmph earlier
in the day, moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 18 kmph
during the past six hours and lay centred over Southwest Bay of
Bengal and adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean about 450 km
south-southeast of Trincomalee, 740 km south-southeast of
Nagapattinam, 860 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 940 km
south-southeast of Chennai.
It is likely to move nearly northwestwards and intensify into a Deep
Depression during next 12 hours.
Thereafter, it is likely to move north-northwestwards towards
Sri Lanka–Tamil Nadu coasts during the subsequent 2 days,
which will bring heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and
Karaikal.
Heavy to very heavy rain at a few places with extremely heavy rain
at one or two places is likely to occur over Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam
and Tiruvarur districts and Karaikal area tomorrow.
A Red alert has been issued to these districts by the weather office as
the rainfall is expected to be extremely heavy.
Heavy to very heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over
Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Sivaganga
districts and Puducherry and at isolated places over Ramanathapuram,
Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Kallakurichi and Chengalpattu districts
tomorrow.
