New Delhi, Oct 24 (Reporter): A Delhi Special Court on Thursday heard arguments in the Saraswati Vihar Anti-Sikh riots case filed against Former Congress Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar. In the incident, Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh were killed in the Saraswati Vihar area during the riots on November 1, 1984. Special judge for MPs/MLAs cases Kaveri Baweja after hearing arguments on behalf of the Prosecution and Defence Counsel said, "Today, extensive arguments have been advanced on behalf of the Complainant and rebutted by the Defence Counsel". Sajjan Kumar, now in judicial custody, was produced via video conferencing. During the course of the arguments, the reader of the court brought to the notice of the judge that the accused has logged out and is not present through VC now. The court directed the reader to enquire from the jail authorities regarding the non-appearance of the accused through video conferencing during the court proceedings. The jail officials informed it happened due to some technical glitch/network issue. The Counsel for the accused submitted that he intends to file hard copies of the judgments/ citations relied upon in support of his written arguments. The court said, "Let the same be done within two/three days from today. The court also requires time to go through the judgments/ citations relied upon by Ld. Senior Counsel for the Complainant today. Accordingly, this case is directed to be listed on 08.11.2024 at 11 AM for clarifications, if any". "Accused be produced through VC on the said date. Jail Superintendent concerned is directed to inform the next date of hearing in the matter to the Accused. Let Jail Superintendent be informed through Incharge, Lockup, RADC" the court said. Counsel for victims argued that the police investigation was tardy and manipulated in the Sikh riots cases just to save the accused person. He further submitted that it is not an isolated case, it was a part of a bigger massacre and genocide. It argued that as per official figures, 2700 Sikhs were killed in Delhi in 1984 and it was not an ordinary situation. The case was investigated by the Special Investigation Team constituted on the recommendation of the Justice G P Mathur committee and the SIT filed a charge sheet. The court had framed charges against the accused Sajjan Kumar on December 16, 2021. The SIT has alleged that the accused was leading the said mob and upon his instigation and abetment, the mob had burnt alive two persons and had also damaged, destroyed and looted their household articles and other property, burnt their house and also inflicted severe injuries on the person of their family members and relatives residing in their house...////...
