Delhi air quality plummets to severe level

New Delhi, Nov 14 (Reporter) The air quality in the national capital deteriorated to alarming levels on Thursday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a "severe" category reading of 426 as of 4 pm. Delhi and other parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) were enveloped in a thick layer of smog with low visibility. The data of the Central Pollution Control Board revealed that certain areas in Delhi recorded even higher AQI levels. The AQI at Anand Vihar station was recorded at 459, Bawana registered an AQI of 455, Sonia Vihar’s AQI reached 428, Punjabi Bagh recorded an AQI of 460, and Rohini recorded an AQI of 453. Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted, “Coming back to Delhi from Wayanad where the air is beautiful and the AQI is 35, was like entering a gas chamber. The blanket of smog is even more shocking when seen from the air.” “Delhi’s pollution gets worse every year. We really should put our heads together and find a solution for cleaner air. It’s beyond this party or that, it’s practically impossible to breathe especially for kids, elders and those with respiratory issues. We just have to do something about it,” She added. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Delhi and the NCR are likely to experience smog and dense fog during the night and morning hours till 17th of November. An Air Quality Index between 0 and 50 is considered good, between 51 and 100 satisfactory, between 101 and 200 moderate, between 201 and 300 poor, and between 301 and 400 very poor.
