Thiruvananthapuram, July 7 (Reporter) Expressing solidarity with Palestine, CPI(M) has called for 'Digital Protest' against Israel.
Calling upon the public to join a 'digital protest' in solidarity with Palestine, CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby urged everyone to switch off their phones and computers daily from 9 pm to 9.30 pm.
"A strong statement must be made that we ordinary citizens, too, can do something against the genocide being carried out by Israel in occupied Gaza," MA Baby said.
"From 9 pm tonight, for one week, every day from 9 to 9.30, we request all those who believe in peace to participate in the protest happening around the world by switching off mobile phones and computers. This is a digital fast; so no social media, messages or comments."
"The report by Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestine, was published the other day. It states that Microsoft, Google (Alphabet Inc.), Amazon, IBM, etc, are all profiteering from this genocide. In this context, this digital fast is all the more relevant," he explained.
He described the protest as one that considers the opportunities and realities of the present digital era. The 30-minute digital silence each night is intended to send a strong message of support to the people of Palestine, he said.
“This is a form of satyagraha suited to the digital age,” he added, stating that the CPI(M), as a political party, is officially expressing solidarity with the campaign.
He accused the United States of backing Israel’s assault on Gaza and said no meaningful effort was being made by the U.S. to initiate a ceasefire. He further noted that the majority of those being killed in the attacks are children and women.
