Congress will join Omar government after J&K gets statehood

New Delhi, Oct 16 (Reporter) Amidst speculation that Congress will not join the new government in Jammu and Kashmir despite its pre-poll alliance with the National Conference (NC), senior party sources said it had contested the election with the promise of giving J&K full statehood, and prior to that, it was not right to join the government. Congress sources said party leader Rahul Gandhi had assured the people of the Union Territory of fighting for restoration of full statehood and had also criticised the government for making Jammu and Kashmir a Union Territory. Sources said, “Until this promise is fulfilled, we do not see any moral justification of joining the government". Sources also said as soon as Jammu and Kashmir gets full statehood, Congress will join the coalition government. The party is sensitive about the promises made to the people of the state and considers itself morally committed to it. It may be mentioned that a new government was formed today in Jammu and Kashmir under the leadership of National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. The swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and representatives of various parties of the India bloc. In the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, NC emerged as the largest party by winning 42 seats while Congress won six seats and BJP won 29 seats.
