Hyderabad, Mar 26 (Reporter) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy addressed the Legislative Council on Wednesday, shedding light on the worrying state of the education system in the state.
Citing the 2021 National Achievement Survey, he revealed that a majority of students in Class 3 and 5 failed to achieve even basic competency in key subjects.
According to the survey, Telangana ranked 36th in Telugu, English, and Hindi for Class 3 and Class 5, 35th in Mathematics, and 36th in Environmental Science (EVS). The Chief Minister also highlighted a steep decline in foundational literacy and numeracy levels among students over the years.
The number of students able to read and perform basic calculations has significantly dropped since 2018. The enrollment in government schools has decreased by 6.5 lakh students. However, the government has responded by filling 10,000 teacher vacancies and facilitating the transfer of 36,000 teachers transparently.
Revanth Reddy asserted that the decline in education is not just a government failure but a societal issue that demands collective responsibility. He emphasized the need for an "educational purge" but accused political parties of obstructing reform efforts for their own interests.
To address the skill gap, the government has launched Young India Skills University and is setting up the Young India Sports University and Academy to promote Olympic-level training. Plans are also in place to establish a Mining University in Kothagudem and upgrade ITIs into Advanced Technology Centers across 100 constituencies.
Revanth Reddy stressed that merely allocating funds won’t solve the issue and called for public participation in shaping an education reform policy. He vowed to take personal responsibility for improving education standards and hinted at keeping the education portfolio under his direct supervision if necessary.
"If we don’t act now, we will be betraying future generations," he warned, urging collective action to revamp Telangana’s education system...////...
