Melbourne, Jan 13 (Reporter) Carlos Alcaraz commenced his quest to become the youngest player to achieve a career Grand Slam with an impressive performance, securing a dominant 6-1, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Alexander Shevchenko in the opening round of the Australian Open 2025 on Monday.
In the night session at the Margaret Court Arena, the 21-year-old Spaniard demonstrated his versatility and skill, using an array of shots to dismantle his opponent. Despite a brief scare early in the second set when Shevchenko earned a break point, Alcaraz quickly regained control, showcasing his powerful forehand and tactical brilliance.
Alcaraz, who arrived in Melbourne with a new haircut, altered service motion, and heavier racquet, looked focused and ready for the season ahead. His level of play was a testament to his ongoing desire for improvement, despite already owning four Grand Slam titles.
The Spanish star's performance was particularly pleasing for coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, who was seen smiling from the court-level coaching box.
Although Shevchenko, ranked No.77, put up a fight in the second set, Alcaraz raised his level of play and ended the match with a flurry of aggressive shots, including a forehand volley with remarkable backspin that left Shevchenko in disbelief.
Next up for Alcaraz is a match against Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, whom he has previously defeated. Alcaraz is eager to continue his journey, with eyes firmly set on the next round as he looks to make his mark at this year’s Australian Open...////...
