Kozhikode, June 9 (Reporter) A Singapore-flagged vessel (MV Wan Hai 503) caught fire near Beypore port, around 78 nautical miles from the coast of Beypore, around 9.30am, while en route from Colombo to Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai, a defence spokesperson said in Kochi. The vessel departed Colombo, Sri Lanka with 22 crew on board on June 6, for Mumbai, with an estimated time of arrival on June 9. On receipt of information, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) assets were diverted immediately and are coordinating rescue operations for the crew. Around 12.40 pm, the resulting fire was reported to have spread to other containers and the crew abandoned the vessel and took to life rafts. ICG Maritime Rescue coordination Centre, Mumbai, diverted MV One Marvel, which recovered 18 of the crew. Of the 18 crew rescued, including captain of the vessel, one is reported to have sustained serious injuries . Four crew members are missing, including two Taiwanese and one each from Indonesia and Myanmar and their fate is being ascertained, Coast Guard said. An ICG Dornier aircraft is maintaining the vessel for real-time assessment. The 270-metre-long vessel is currently adrift and firefight efforts by the Indian Coast Guard have commenced to bring the situation under control. The details of the cargo onboard are being ascertained to determine the nature of fire and the potential risks involved during fire fighting operations. The ICG Dornier aircraft continued to maintain aerial surveillance for real-time assessment of the situation.
