Chennai, Oct 16 (Reporter) The Depression over the Bay moved west-northwestwards with a speed of
15 kmph during the past six hours and will cross the North Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai early tomorrow, even as people of this teeming megapolis got a breather from the rain fury.
The rains relented since 9.00 pm last night, though the city, its suburbs and the surrounding districts
experienced light to moderate showers late last night and this morning.
However, the rains stopped completely for major part of the day, but for a brief spell around noon, as
stagnated rain water in several areas of the city and suburbs started receding as the system inched towards North Tamil Nadu.
The IMD in a bulletin on Wednesday said the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred over southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal about 320 km east-southeast of Chennai,
350 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 400 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh).
It is likely to move westnorthwestwards and cross North Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts
between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during on Thursday early morning.
Meanwhile, the people of Chennai and suburbs heaved a sigh of relief as extremely heavy rains,
as predicted by Met office, following which a Red alert was issued today, is unlikely to occur.
According to private weather bloggers, the Depression might weaken and move towards South
Andhra coast, little away from Tamil Nadu, providing respite from extremely heavy to very heavy
rains.
However, the Met office said the Red Alert continued as moderate to heavy rains, and heavy to
very heavy rain at times, is likely to occur in North coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai
and several districts of the State for the next two days...////...
