Melbourne, Jan 18 (Reporter) Hitting a major milestone, India's Rohan Bopanna notched the 500th tour-level win of his career with a triumph over James Duckworth and Marc Polmans to book a second-round spot at the Australian Open here on Thursday.
Bopanna and Ebden fell 0-5 behind in the first game but recovered to take their first-round match 7(7)-6(5), 4-6, 7-6 (10-2) in the super tie-breaker. The duo wrapped a two-hour, nine-minute victory.
They will next face Australian duo - John Millman and Edward Winter, who defeated Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-6(14-12).
Bopanna is eyeing his maiden Grand Slam title this fortnight in Melbourne, especially after beginning the 2024 journey on a strong note along with Ebden when they reached the championship match at the Adelaide International.
The other two seeded pairings in today's action also advanced at Melbourne Park. Tenth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic downed Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens 7-6(5), 6-3, while 14th seeds Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic prevailed 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 against Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.
India's wildcard entry of Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Sundar Prashanth, though, exited the Australian Open on their Grand Slam debut after losing 3-6, 4-6 to the Hungarian team of Marton Fucsovics and Fabian Marozsan in the first round of men’s doubles.
Earlier, Sumit Nagal was ousted from the Australian Open after he was pipped by China's Juncheng Shang in his men's singles second-round match.
