New Delhi, Aug 5 (Reporter) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday demanded to hold assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as per Supreme Court set deadline, and alleged that the policies of the BJP government at the Centre is against the people of both the Union Territories.
On a social media post X, Kharge alleged, “BJP's policy on Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh neither respects 'Kashmiriyat' nor upholds 'Jamhuriyat' ! The Modi Govt had claimed that this move would help to full integrate Jammu & Kashmir, boost economic development of the region and prevent terrorism and separatism. However, the reality is starkly different.”
The Rajya Sabha MP said, “Since 2019, there have been 683 fatal terror attacks, resulting in the martyrdom of 258 security personnel and the loss of 170 civilian lives. Notably, 25 terror attacks have occurred in the Jammu region since PM Modi's third oath, claiming the lives of 15 soldiers and injuring 27.”
In last few years, targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits have become a new norm, he said and alleged that since 2019, around 65 per cent government department posts were lying vacant, besides rise in unemployment rate in J&K.
The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha also alleged that "40 per cent of projects under the PM's Development Package, 2015, remain pending."
He said that the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh yearn for normalcy, a sentiment they conveyed to Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Stating that the Congress was standing firmly with the people of both the regions which are an integral part of India, Kharge said, “We demand that elections are held according to the Supreme Court set deadline so that people can elect their own representatives, secure Constitutional rights and put a full stop to this mechanism of being 'ruled by bureaucracy'...////...
