BJP's names Dara Singh as candidate in by-poll for UP Legislative Council

Lucknow, Jan 16 (Reporter) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced former cabinet minister Dara Singh Chauhan as its candidate in by-election for one seat of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. This was announced by BJP's national general secretary Arun Singh. Chauhan is likely to file his nomination on Wednesday in the presence of the senior party leaders. The seat for which the by-election is being held fell vacant following the resignation of former Deputy Chief Minister Dr Dinesh Sharma, after he was elected for the Rajya Sabha. It may be noted that Chauhan was the cabinet minister in the first tenure of Yogi Adityanath as the Chief Minister. Ahead of the 2022 UP assembly elections, he resigned from the cabinet and primary membership of BJP and joined Samajwadi Party (SP). In the 2022 assembly elections, he contested the polls as SP candidate from Ghosi seat and was elected as MLA. In July last year he resigned from the membership of the Legislative Assembly and the SP and came back to BJP's fold. In September, Chauhan contested by-poll for Ghosi seat as BJP candidate, but lost to Sudhakar Singh of SP by a margin of more than 40,000 votes.
