Shimla, Feb 27 (Reporter) BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan defeated ruling Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi on toss following cross-voting in the only Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh up for grabs on Tuesday.
According to the BJP election counting agent, their candidate defeated his Congress rival Supreme Court lawyer Singhvi in a toss after both contestants got 34 votes each.
Sharma said the BJP has filed an objection to the cancellation of the vote of Sudarshan Bablu, who was feried in a government helicopter during the day from the hospital. BJP alleged that Congress violated the model code of conduct to misuse government machinery to cost a vote.
After getting clarification from the Election Commission of India and rejecting the objections of the BJP, the presiding officer held the toss in which the BJP candidate was declared the winner.
Six Congress legislators cross-voted, while three independent MLAs reportedly voted in favour of the BJP candidate. As a result, despite having 40 members in the Assembly, the Congress candidate Singhvi lost.
It is the second time a decision was taken by a tie and toss for the RS, as in the 2000 RS poll, Congress also lost a similar election when Amarnath Bijwariya was defeated.
Speaking during the counting, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu accused the Narendra Modi government of kidnapping six party MLAs who reported to Panchkula after casting the votes. The Chief Minister said that the CRPF and Haryana police kidnapped the party MLAs after they cross-voted.
Speaking in the assembly, the leader of the opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, demanded a division of votes on the cut motions of the Health Department. Thakur said the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government lost the majority in the House. However, the Speaker expunged the remarks of LOP in the house, but he repeated the same outside the assembly...////...
