Chandigarh, Oct 8 (Reporter) Staving off anti-incumbency, the BJP on Tuesday extended its rule in Haryana for five more years by achieving a historic third back-to-back term in the vote count for the Assembly polls. The saffron outfit picked up 48 seats, two more than the magic figure needed to run the government in the 90-seat Assembly. The Congress, riding high on confidence of wresting the northern state from the BJP after ten years, saw its hopes come crashing down as it could grab only 37 seats. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) took pole position in two seats, while independents coasted to victory in three constituencies. Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which in the previous election five years back fought against BJP only to later become its partner in the government, failed to open its account this time. The polling was held on October 5. An upbeat Chief Minister Nayev Singh Saini credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies and vision for the BJP's victory and said the party reaped the fruits of the hard work put in by BJP leaders and workers. It was a memorable day for the 54-year-old Saini, who received congratulatory calls from BJP National President JP Nadda and other leaders after the party's spectacular showing that defied the exit poll predictions of a Congress victory. Less than seven months after he took over as the state Chief Minister replacing senior leader Manohar Lal Khattar in a dramatic turn of events spanning a single day, Saini on Tuesday emerged as the man of the moment for leading BJP to victory in the state which even the other day was being rated as tough for the saffron outfit. It was double delight for the former state BJP chief, who also won the Assembly race from Ladwa by prevailing over Mewa Singh of the Congress by 16,054 votes. Among other BJP leaders, former Home Minister Anil Vij won. For the Congress, Aditya Surjewala, son of senior leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, defeated BJP veteran Leela Ram from Kaithal by 7,000 votes. Another Congress star candidate wrestlerVinesh Phogat beat BJP candidate Captain Yogesh Kumar by 6,015 votes in the Julana assembly seat. INLD leader Abhay Chautala also lost. The day saw a riveting contest, with Congress surging initially in 60-odd seats. But the script turned upside down within a couple of hours, as the BJP gradually closed the gap and then opened up a lead that the grand old party failed to erase. However, the Congress cried foul. Describing the results as "totally unexpected " and "completely surprising", Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed before the media that "serious complaints" regarding EVMs and counting had been received from three districts. "Under these circumstances, we can't accept the results," he said. The Haryana Assembly polls Saturday recorded a voter turnout of 67.90 percent. A total of 1,031 candidates, including 464 independents and 101 women, competed in the high-stakes election...////...
