Chennai, Apr 20 (Reporter) Newly-elected CPI(M) National General Secretary and
Former Kerala Minister M A Baby on Sunday termed as opportunistic, the revival
of alliance between the BJP and AIADMK for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly
elections.
He also exuded confidence that since the BJP and AIADMK had entered into
an opportunistic alliance, people would vote for the DMK-led Front and further
strengthen it.
Talking to reporters after calling on Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin
at the DMK Headquarters 'Anna Arivalayam' here, he said the BJP Government
at the Centre headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been destroying the
secular fabric, rights of Minorities and democratic rights under the guidance of
the fascist RSS.
"People of the country are seeing this", Mr Baby said, adding, the recent example
was the affront on the rights of Minorities in the form of Waqf (Amendment) Bill
passed in Parliament.
Pointing out that the AIADMK, which voted against the Waqf Bill in Parliament,
he said at the same time it has entered into an electoral alliance, which went
against the interests of Minorities.
Observing that the Supreme Court has passed serious comments against the
Waqf Act, he said the Court had also observed that several clauses in the Act
violated the rights guaranteed to Muslims under the Constitution.
He also congratulated Mr Stalin for waging a legal battle and getting the historic
verdict from the Supreme Court indicting the Governor over the delay in granting
assent to the Ten Bills adopted in the State Assembly and protecting the rights
of the State.
Noting that the Tamil Nadu government headed by Mr Stalin had moved the Apex
Court on protecting the autonomy of States and had secured historic victories,
Mr Baby said during the meeting he discussed with him the need to strengthen
the secular and democratic forces for the TN Assembly polls which was less than
an year away.
"We have decided to face the elections jointly with the Secular and democratic
forces".
Observing that the Front headed by the DMK--the Secular Progressive Alliance
(SPA)--would be a role model for the entire country, the former Kerala Minister
said it would be further strengthened with the addition of more parties.
He said he also discussed on how to effectively counter the communal forces
by uniting the people of TN under the SPA leadership and the DMK's key role
in further strengthening it.
Later, in a social media post after the meeting, Mr Stalin said during the meeting
Mr Baby congratulated TN for two landmark developments--the Supreme Court’s
historic verdict that exposed the limits of the Governor’s office, and the DMK
regime forming a High-Level Committee for protecting the State Autonomy.
Terming that these are not isolated victories, Mr Stalin said they were the living
expression of the federal ideals jointly championed by them at the CPI-M's 24th
National in held Madurai.
Mr Stalin wrote ""Comrade M.A. Baby, the newly elected General Secretary
of @CPIMSpeak, called on me today and congratulated Tamil Nadu for two
landmark developments — the Supreme Court’s historic verdict that exposed
the limits of the Governor’s office, and our formation of a High-Level Committee
for #StateAutonomy."
"These are not isolated victories", he said.
"They are the living expression of the federal ideals we jointly championed
at the #CPIM24thPartyCongress in Madurai--a vision where the Constitution
prevails, and the will of elected governments cannot be obstructed by unelected
authority", Mr Stalin wrote.
