Washington/New Delhi, Aug 27 (Reporter) The White House has said that President Joe Biden spoke to PM Narendra Modi about his trip to Kyiv and “the prospects for moving forward in accordance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan for a just peace”.
White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby, answering questions regarding Monday's phone conversation between the two leaders, also said: “We welcome any other country that wants to help President Zelenskyy work towards this just peace.”
“And any country that’s willing to come at that discussion by starting with President Zelenskyy’s perspective, by hearing him out, by signing on to that proposal — and I won’t speak for India and what they’re signing on to or not; that’s for the Prime Minister and his team to talk to — but we certainly welcome any nation that is willing to be helpful and to start that conversation by ascribing to
President Zelenskyy’s just peace proposal and getting his perspectives.”
India has stressed that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way forward to resolve the Ukraine conflict, and that both parties – Kyiv and Moscow – must sit down together to thrash out issues, and also that no solution can be found on the battlefield. This message was also conveyed by PM Modi during his trip to Kyiv last week.
However, the West is backing Zelenskyy’s peace proposal.
Zelenskyy’s peace proposal, also known as the “10-point peace formula,” was announced in November 2022. The proposal consists of the following key points:
*Withdrawal of Russian troops: Complete withdrawal of Russian forces from all Ukrainian territory.
*Reparations: Compensation for damages and losses incurred by Ukraine during the war.
*Prosecution of war crimes: Punishment of Russian officials responsible for war crimes and human rights violations.
*Prisoners of war and civilian detainees: Release and exchange of prisoners of war and civilian detainees.
*Russia-Ukraine border: Establishment of a new border between Ukraine and Russia, with Crimea’s status to be addressed in a later phase.
*Ceasefire: Immediate ceasefire, with details to be negotiated.
*War crimes investigation: International investigation into war crimes committed during the conflict.
*Ecological damage: Restoration and compensation for environmental damage caused by the war, specifically regarding the Kakhovka Dam.
*Security guarantees: International security guarantees against future aggression from Russia.
*Global Peace Summit: A summit to be convened to promote and support the peace plan, with participation from 92 countries and eight international organizations.
Zelenskyy has emphasized that these demands are non-negotiable and that Ukraine will not compromise on its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The proposal has been met with skepticism by Russia, which has rejected Ukraine’s demands and insisted on its own terms for a peace settlement...////...
