Lucknow, Aug 21 (Reporter) The call for Bharat Bandh by Scheduled Caste and Tribe organisations against the Supreme Court's decision on the issue of reservation did not have any effect in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.
During the bandh, shops and business establishments opened on time in most of the districts including Lucknow, Kanpur and Prayagraj, while the call did not have any effect on road and rail traffic. Schools and colleges were open and the crowd on the roads was seen like normal days.
The bandh supporters held a peaceful demonstration at the Ambedkar statue located in Hazratganj area of Lucknow. Apart from this, bandh supporters also took out processions in some other areas of the city.
During this, tight security arrangements were made. Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supported the bandh. Security forces were alerted to deal with any untoward incident during the bandh.
According to the report received from Mathura, BSP and other Bharat Bandh supporters took out a huge procession in Mathura to protest against the order to remove the creamy layer from reservation. The procession started from near the statue of Ambedkar at Deeg Gate and reached the collectorate where a memorandum addressed to the President was given to the Additional District Magistrate.
SP President Akhilesh Yadav supported the bandh and posted on Instagram, "The public movement to protect reservation is a positive effort. It will instill new consciousness among the exploited and deprived and will prove to be a shield of public power against any kind of tampering with reservation. Peaceful movement is a democratic right."
He said that Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar had already warned that the Constitution will prove effective only when the intentions of those implementing it are right. When the governments in power will tamper with the Constitution and the rights given by the Constitution through fraud, scams and scandals, then the public will have to come out on the streets. Public movements rein in an unbridled government.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, while supporting the bandh in a peaceful manner, said, "BSP supports Bharat Bandh because there is anger and resentment among them against the decision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court regarding sub-categorization of SC ST and creamy layer in them on August 1, 2024 due to the conspiracy of parties like BJP and Congress against reservation and their collusion to make it ineffective and finally end it."
Mayawati said, "Along with SC-ST, the constitutional right to reservation given to OBC society is also the result of the continuous struggle of Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the true messiah of these classes, whose necessity and sensitivity should be understood by BJP, Congress and other parties and they should not play with it."
A call for Bharat Bandh has been given across the country against the Supreme Court's decision on creamy layer in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe reservation at Kaushambi district headquarters.
According to the information received from Moradabad, the call for Bharat Bandh by various organisations and political parties in Moradabad division including Amroha regarding the provision of sub-classification in reservation did not have any effect.
