Bengal: Wajahat Khan gets six days' police custody in hate speech case

Kolkata, June 10 (Reporter) A city court on Tuesday remanded Wajahat Khan, arrested for his alleged hate speeches, to six days in police custody till June 16. Wajahat was arrested by the Kolkata Police on Monday. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Amit Sarkar rejected Wajahat's plea for bail and sent him to police custody for six days. Khan, who jumped several police summons from June 1, was arrested from a flat in the central part of the city on Monday. Wajahat came to limelight after his complaint to the Garden Reach police station here seeking the arrest of Pune-based law student and social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli (23) from Gurugram for her post which allegedly hurt the sentiment of people from a particular religious communitu. The Calcutta High Court granted interim bail to Panoli on June 6. A case was filed against Khan at the Golf Green Police Station in south Kolkata, accusing him of spreading hate speech and offending religious sentiments through his social media posts.
