Kolkata, Oct 25 (Reporter) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said some 2.16 lakh people have been shifted to safer places in South Bengal districts given cyclonic storm Dana, even as coastal areas, especially East Medinipur experienced rain from early Friday.
Banerjee, who monitored the situation overnight at Nabanna, on Friday after a virtual video conferencing with the district Magistrates said East Medinapur district was worst affected due to DANA.
Banerjee said the loss of property, including crops could not be immediately ascertained and advised the authorities to find out details and take up measures for redressal.
She informed that about 2.16 lakh people have been shifted to safer places, of which 1.5 lakh people were taken to the 1227 relief camps.
Banerjee said only one death was reported, that too when a man was working on his cable at home. She said the government would see if his family was given support at this time.
Some 175 wooden light masts were uprooted in East Medinipur affecting power supplies.
The city of Kolkata was not much affected by the rains and storms, though many low-lying streets in central, north, and south were affected following near knee-deep water.
The incessant rains started from around 6 AM and were still continuing when the reports came in.
Flight operations also resumed at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata from 8 AM. It was closed from 6 PM on Thursday as a precautionary measure. Local trains also run in Howrah and Sealdah stations...////...
