Banned Jamaat fields its 4 former members as Independent candidates

Srinagar, Aug 27 (Reporter) In a major political development, the banned Jamaat-e-Islami fielded at least four of former members as Independent candidates from South Kashmir. This is the first time that members of Jamaat- a socio-political organisation- are entering into electoral politics since 1987 when they last contested the elections. A senior party leader of the Jamaat told UNI that they fielded candidates from four seats of Kulgam, Devsar, Pulwama and Zainpora assembly seats. He said former members of the organisation Sayar Ahmad Reshi filed nominations from Kulgam, Talat Majeed from Pulwama, Nazir Ahmad Bhat from Devsar and Umer Hameed from Zainapora Shopian. “ We may field some more candidates in the other two phases,” the Jamaat leader said. In 2023 Talat was the first Jamaat leader to join the mainstream party . The other candidate Sayar Reshi was associated with Falah-e-Aam Trust (Welfare for All) , a trust set up by the Jamat. The Jamaat leader said that they would support other Independent candidates after holding consultations . The fielding of its members as Independent candidates by Jamat is seen by many as an effort by the outfit to get its ban lifted which was imposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019.
