Bangladesh to probe power agreements inked under Hasina regime, including Adani plant

Dhaka, Nov 24 (Reporter) A review committee of Bangladesh’s interim government has recommended a probe into the power agreements signed during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime, including one with India’s Adani Group. This comes days after the Bangladesh high court asked the Mohammed Younus-led Interim Government to examine the power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Adani Group signed in 2017 and submit the report in two months. Additionally, the Bangladesh high court has also asked the government to submit all documents related to the 25-year deal between the power division and Adani Group in a month’s time. The Adani Group had recently informed Bangladesh of an unpaid $800 million power supply bill. On Sunday, in an official statement, the Bangladesh government said that the National Review Committee of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has recommended that the Interim government hire a reputed legal and investigative firm to review major power generation contracts signed during Sheikh Hasina's rule between 2009 and 2024. The committee is collecting evidence that may lead to potential renegotiation or cancellation of contracts in line with the international arbitration laws and proceedings, according to the chief adviser's press wing. "To facilitate this, we recommend the immediate engagement of one or more top-quality international legal and investigative firms to assist our committee," the statement said. The statement, issued by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s office, said the committee was currently reviewing seven major energy and power projects, including the Adani (Godda) BIFPCL 1234.4 MW coal-fired plant, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Limited.
