Bangkok/Dhaka, Apr 4 (Reporter) Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus has said that holding elections in the country is currently the top priority of his government.
Speaking at the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, today, Yunus highlighted certain aspects of the July 2024 uprising which saw the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He said: "I have assured our people that, once our mandate is fulfilled in the conduct of elections as well as the required reform is done, we shall hold a free, fair and participatory election," he said, as per the Business Standard Bangladesh.
Since taking power in August last year, Yunus, who is backed by the army, has spoken of conducting polls several times, particularly after repeatedly being criticised over the issue by his political allies, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and the Jamaat-e-Islami-Bangladesh.
In another attack on Sheikh Hasina, Yunus spoke of the Bangladesh Liberation War, comparing the 15-year-Awami League administration to the military dictatorship of the Pakistan Army in 1971, which had resulted in millions of casualties.
"Our people aspired for an inclusive, just and free society where every ordinary person could materialise his or her dreams.
"Sadly, in the course of the past 15 years, our people, especially youth, progressively saw their spaces and rights curtailed. They witnessed deep erosion of almost every state institution and civic rights trampled," he said, according to The Daily Star.
He said the Interim Government is pledge-bound to undertake robust and far-reaching reforms to restore economic stability and sustained growth.
"We are committed to good governance, combating corruption and bringing order to every sphere of the economy. These are at the core of the reforms we have planned,” he added...////...
