Sharjah, Oct 8 (Reporter) Australia extended their dominance in Group A of the Women's T20 World Cup, defeating New Zealand by 60 runs in a comprehensive performance that saw them shine in all aspects of the game.
The victory, led by stellar contributions from both the bat and ball, cements Australia's position at the top of the group as they eye a deep run in the tournament.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Australia’s top order laid a solid foundation. Openers Alyssa Healy (26 off 20) and Beth Mooney (40 off 32) powered the innings with an aggressive start, supported by Ellyse Perry (30 off 24) and Phoebe Litchfield (18 off 18).
Despite a valiant bowling effort from New Zealand's Melie Kerr, who took an impressive 4/26, Australia managed to post a competitive total of 148/8.
New Zealand's chase faltered early as Megan Schutt etched her name in the record books by becoming the leading wicket-taker in the history of the Women's T20 World Cup. Schutt’s remarkable spell of 3/3 from 3.2 overs, combined with contributions from Sophie Molineux (2/15) and Annabel Sutherland (3/21), decimated the White Ferns' batting order. Only Kerr showed resistance, top-scoring with 29, as New Zealand were bowled out for 88 in 18.2 overs.
Sutherland came close to a hat-trick, dismissing Maddy Green and Isabella Gaze in consecutive deliveries, though Lea Tahuhu managed to deny her the milestone. The Australian bowlers’ clinical display handed New Zealand their second defeat, significantly affecting their net run rate and leaving them third in the group.
With two wins from two, Australia remain firm favourites to advance, while New Zealand must regroup quickly with crucial matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan ahead. The tournament, held across Dubai and Sharjah, will continue with 23 matches in total over 18 days...////...
