New Delhi, Apr 14 (Reporter) Citing the callous inaction of Delhi Jal Board officers, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Sunday demanded the Delhi LG VK Saxena to suspend the CEO of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) within 24 hours following the death of a woman due to violence over water shortage in the national capital. In a letter, Atishi urged Saxena to institute an independent inquiry into the acts of omission and commission of the Chief Secretary, as well as officers of the Finance Department, and Urban Development Department claiming that their actions have led to DJB being starved of funds in FY2023-24 and therefore unable to execute essential works like installation of borewells. She further asked to initiate disciplinary action against all officers - both in DJB and other departments of GNCTD- responsible for the non-augmentation of water supply for the summers of 2024. A shocking incident happened in the Farsh Bazar/ Bhikam Singh Colony area of East Delhi where a shortage of water supply led to violence and has culminated in the death of a woman. Delhi Police apprehended a 15-year-old girl for allegedly stabbing her 34-year-old neighbour to death following a dispute over filling water from the common tap, officials said. Expressing her anguish over the incident, Atishi alleged that the Chief Minister gave clear directions and a roadmap was provided for improving water supply in Delhi, but despite repeated instructions from the Water Minister to the CEO of Delhi Jal Board and the Chief Secretary, no action has been taken to prevent the impending water crisis. In the last few weeks, many reminders were given to CEO DJB and Chief Secretary to ensure that the water supply must be augmented through tube wells and water tankers. Grievances regarding water shortage have regularly been sent to the Chief Secretary on WhatsApp, She said. Atishi alleged that the incident is a consequence of the callous inaction of the officers of the Delhi Jal Board. This inaction is tantamount to criminal negligence and cannot be ignored; immediate and exemplary action must be taken against the highest level of officers of DJB, she said...////...
