New Delhi, July 2 (Reporter) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported incident of brutal assault on two Scheduled Caste individuals by members of another community in Ganjam district, Odisha last month. The victims were allegedly targeted on suspicion of illegally smuggling cattle.
Following the report, notices have been issued to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha, seeking a detailed report within 15 days on the incident, said the NHRC in a statement here. "The Commission has stated that if the facts reported are accurate, they raise serious concerns regarding the violation of human rights," as per the statement.
“The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the concerned officials,” the statement added. "The Commission has called for details on the action taken against the perpetrators, as well as any compensation provided to the victims."
According to a media report, the two individuals, who belong to the Scheduled Caste, were beaten up, forced to eat grass, and drink drain water. Their mobile phones were reportedly snatched, and their heads were forcibly tonsured by the accused, said the statement...////...
