New Delhi, July 19 (Reporter) India on Friday stated that it sees the violent anti-quota protests sweeping Bangladesh as an “internal matter” of that country, and added that all Indian nationals are safe.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, answering queries at a briefing here, also said that there are 15,000 Indians in Bangladesh, which includes 8,500 Indian students.
Answering queries on the advisory issued by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka asking Indians to avoid local travel and minimise their movement outside their residences, the spokesperson said that "All Indians are safe in Bangladesh".
He also said that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is closely monitoring the situation in the neighbouring country, where 17 people are reported to have been killed in the clashes between protesters and security personnel and many others injured.
He said the Indian High Commission will be providing regular updates and requested the family members of Indians there to follow the updates. “We remain committed to provide all assistance to our nationals,” he added.
To a question on reports that Islamists are hijacking the anti-quota protests and are seeking to overthrow the regime of Sheikh Hasina, the spokesperson said: “We see this as an internal matter of Bangladesh.”
He added that all Indians are safe in Bangladesh, and that many Indian students pursue medical education there. “All are safe and sound, and in touch with the Indian High Commission and Assistant High Commission, and we are in touch to render any assistance they may need,” he added...////...
