Chennai, June 2 (Reporter) Taking a dig at the Opposition AIADMK, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
and DMK President welcomed the life term awarded by the Mahila court to the accused in
the Anna University sexual assault case and said the verdict has shattered the petty-minded
intentions of those trying to score political brownie points even from the injustice done to the
victim.
Terming the verdict as the reply of the state police to those pretending to care about the
safety of women in the state, he said, “The Tamil Nadu Police have responded through
their action to those who merely pretend to care about women’s safety.”
In his ‘X’ handle after the court sentenced the lone accused to life term, Mr Stalin said,
“With the verdict now delivered, even the Mahila Court has come forward to commend
the police for their exemplary work in this case. The petty-minded intentions of a few
who sought to score political brownie points even from the injustice meted out to a young
woman have been shattered."
"During the investigation, the High Court itself appreciated the handling of the case. We
investigated the Chennai student case fairly and swiftly, and completed it within just five
months, thereby securing severe punishment for the offender,” he added.
"I welcome and express my gratitude for the court’s verdict, which-- in line with the recent
amendment moved by us that there shall be no premature release for sexual offenders--
has imposed a strict sentence without any concession such as remission,” Mr Stalin,
said, drawing distinction between the AU and Pollachi sexual assault cases last week
to demonstrate his and the previous AIADMK government’s concern for women safety.
Leaders of various political parties also hailed the verdict, though Opposition parties
said that the ruling DMK tried to shield the accused and wanted 'others', who they
alleged were linked to the case, should be probed and brought to book...////...
