Amid wet forecast, night cold continues

Srinagar, Feb 18 (Reporter) Amid forecast of rain and snow from Wednesday, the night cold continues to grip the Kashmir Valley, with all weather stations recording sub-zero temperatures on Tuesday, an officials said. Night temperatures across the valley dropped by 1-2°C, with Srinagar shivering at -0.8°C, which is 2.1°C below the seasonal average. According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected at many places across Jammu and Kashmir on February 19 and 20, bringing a possibility of further temperature fluctuations. There hasn't been any major snowfall in Kashmir thus winter and this has resulted in a deficit of rain and snowfall upto 70 to 75% . The MeT office in Srinagar is hopeful that Western Disturbance from tomorrow will result in good snow and rainfall. MeT said the precipitation is very likely to start during the late afternoon of Wednesday till the evening of Thursday. The plains of Kashmir and Jammu may receive light to moderate rain/thunder with gusty winds at a few places. Higher reaches of Chenab Valley and South Kashmir may receive moderate snowfall of 6 to 10 inches while higher reaches of north and central Kashmir may receive 4 to 8 inches, the MeT office said. Light to moderate snowfall is also very likely at many places of the Union Territory of Ladakh with heavy snowfall over the Zojila Pass, Drass, Sanko and Panzila area, officials said. During Past 24 hours the day temperature has risen by 4-5°C in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir with the highest temperature observed over Jammu 26.2°C. The MeT office said the day temperature also rose 3-5°C in Kashmir Division with Srinagar recorded at 14.2°C and the frontier border district of Kupwara at 13.9°C was highest among other stations. The minimum temperature recorded at the tourist resort of Pahalgam at -4.4°C, Ski resort of Gulmarg -6.0°C and Qazigund had a low of -1.6°C, the MeT office said...////...
