Amid no snow in Kashmir, dry weather predicted till Jan 20

Srinagar, Jan 11 (Reporter) As Kashmir is witnessing a snowless winter after almost seven years, the Meteorological Centre on Thursday predicted a dry weather till January 20. However, a feeble Western Disturbance is approaching on January 17, that may bring light snow over isolated higher reaches. “Dry weather is likely to continue till January 20 with cloudy on 12th & 17th evening,” the MeT said. It added that slight improvement in minimum temperature during January 12 and 17 is expected at all the weather stations in Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir is reeling under an intense cold and temperatures continue to be below freezing point during the night. However, days are relatively warmer. Srinagar- the summer capital of J&K- recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.0 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night, same as the previous night, MeT said. Pulwama in south Kashmir was the coldest place as it recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius. The tourist resorts of Pahalgam in south Kashmir and Gulmarg in Baramulla district recorded minus 6.3 degrees Celsius and minus 3.5 respectively. Kashmir’s harshest 40 days winter period, “Chilla-i-Kalan”, began on December 21 and despite that is almost halfway through, Kashmir has witnessed no snow. Even the ski resort of Gulmarg is bereft of any snow, leaving the tourists upset. Scientists say the dry winters would mean higher mass loss of glaciers in this hydrological year, if the weather conditions do not improve and might impact hydropower generation, irrigation agriculture and dependent sectors...////...
