Mumbai, July 21 (Reporter) In a significant verdict, the Bombay High Court has acquitted all the 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai local train serial blasts case today. The court observed that the investigating agencies failed to present any concrete evidence to substantiate the charges against the accused. The horrific incident occurred on July 11, 2006, when seven blasts ripped through local trains across Mumbai's western suburbs. The coordinated explosions killed over 187 people and injured more than 700. Initial investigations pointed to the involvement of terrorist outfits, Lashkar-e-Taiba and SIMI, leading to charges against 12 individuals. Of these, five were sentenced to death and seven to life imprisonment by the trial court. The accused later challenged the verdict in the Bombay High Court, which held a continuous hearing under a special bench comprising Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Shyam Chandak. Those originally sentenced to death included Kamal Ansari, Mohammad Faizal, Ata-ur-Rehman Sheikh, Ehtesham Siddiqui, Navid Hussain Khan, and Asif Khan. Among them, Kamal Ansari passed away due to COVID-19 while he was lodged in Nagpur Central Jail. The seven others sentenced to life imprisonment were Tanvir Ahmad Ansari, Mohammad Majid Shafi, Sheikh Mohammad Ali Alam, Mohammad Sajid Ansari, Muzzammil Ata-ur-Rehman Sheikh, Sohail Mehmood Sheikh, and Jameer Latifur-Rehman Sheikh. Reversing the trial court’s ruling, the Bombay High Court has now acquitted all the accused, stating that there was insufficient evidence to prove their involvement in the attacks...////...
