Kabul, June 19 (Reporter) More than 5 million Afghan refugees have relinquished their refugee status and returned to Afghanistan since the current Afghan administration took power nearly four years ago, according to Abdul Mutalib Haqqani, spokesman for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation. "Since taking over power by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, 310,000 families numbering 2,848,000 individuals have returned from Pakistan, Iran and Türkiye to their homeland Afghanistan," the state-run Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA) quoted Haqqani as saying Wednesday night. Citing the official, the state-owned media outlet reported that in addition to the return of families to Afghanistan, a total of 2,433,000 individuals from the said countries have been either deported or returned voluntarily over the period, and in general, "5,281,000 refugees" have been resettled in their home country. The Afghan interim government took over power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of the U.S.-led foreign troops from Afghanistan.
