Bhubaneswar, May 25 (Reporter) An estimated 21.30 percent of the total 94.8 lakh voters exercised their franchise till 11 AM in the third phase of polling in Odisha for 6 Parliamentary and 42 Assembly seats amid tight security on Saturday.
Election Commission sources said the Bhubaneswar Parliamentary constituency recorded approximately 20.72 percent polling, Cuttack 20.47 percent, Dhenkanal 22.41 percent, Keonjhar 20.89,Puri 21.51 and Sambalpur 21.89 percent polling till 11AM.
District wise Angul reported 22.85 percent polling, Cuttack 20.13 percent, Deogarh 24 percent, Dhenkanal 20.92 percent ,Keonjhar 20.84 percent, Khurdha 21.61 percent polling, Mayurbhanj 21.24 percent,Nayagarh 19.30 percent, Puri 21.64 percent, and Sambalpur 22.49 percent.
The Dhenkanal Parliamentary segment saw the highest voter turnout of 36.34 percent in the Pallahara Assembly constituency, followed by Kuchinda and Chilika in Sambalpur, Begunia in Bhubaneswar, and Patna in Keonjhar, with a total of 24.50 voter turnout till 11 AM.
Barring some sporadic incidents, polling was going on smoothly across the state.
However, there was a lot of resentment among the voters due to glitches in EVMs. Polling could not be held in some booths for over one and half hours due to mal-functioning of the EVMs.
Many people in several booths, after waiting for long hours in the hot and humid weather, return home without casting their votes.
Odisha Chief Electoral Officer N B Dhal said 166 ballot units, 126 control units, and 156 VVPADs were replaced, and the voting was going on smoothly.
In a shocking incident, a polling agent died due to suspected sunstroke in booth no 136 of Bahalunda in Hindol block in Dhenkanal district. Sources said the Polling agent suddenly felt uneasy and was taken to Hindol Medical but the doctors declared him dead.
A 65-year-old voter died in extreme heat at Baladia Nuagaon booth in Nayagarh district, becoming unconscious while waiting to cast her ballot. She was immediately taken to the nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead.
There was also resentment among the voters as the security personnel barred the voters from wearing smartwatches and carrying mobile phones to enter polling booths.
The voters alleged that there was no prior publicity about it and no arrangements were made to keep the mobile phones outside the booths forcing the several voters to return home withot exercising their franchise.
Tension was reported in booth No 115 of Radha Govind Pur under Athagarh Assembly constituency after two rival groups of people clashed with each other and threw chairs at each other.
The incident occurred after an old voter who could not see properly wanted one of his relatives to help him cast his vote which was opposed by the other group.
Tension also reported in booth No 127 of Gobardanga under Brahmagiri Assembly constituency after Upsana Mohapatra, the BJP Assembly candidate for Brahmagiri Assembly seat alleged that the Presiding officer used unparliamentary words against her and asking voters not to vote in her favour.
Meanwhile Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik after casting his vote at the Aerodrome Area UP school under Ekamra Bhubaneswar Assembly constituency said BJD will have a great victory both in Parliament and Assembly elections with the blessings of the people and appealed to the people to exercise their franchise...////...
