135 persons injured in 2 Jallikattu events in TN

Tiruchirapalli / Madurai (Tamil Nadu) Jan 15 (Reporter) About 135 persons were injured, 21 of them critically in the renowned ‘Jallikattu’ (taming of bulls) events held at Periya Suriyur village in Tiruchirapalli and Palamedu in Madurai districts on Wednesday. Official sources said 83 persons, including bull tamers, bull owners and spectators were injured in the Jallikattu event at Periya Suriyur village. Fourteen persons, who sustained multiple injuries in the event, were admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital at Tiruchirapalli. Over 400 bull tamers and 681 bulls participated in the day-long event. Ranjith Kumar of Navalur Kuttapattu was adjudged as the best bull tamer and was awarded a motorcycle for his valour. He tamed 13 bulls in the event. A bull participating in the event died after sustaining grievous injuries. The renowned Jallikattu event held at Palamedu in Madurai district passed off largely incident-free, barring injuries to 52 persons, including 24 tamers, 15 bull owners and 13 spectators. Seven critically injured persons were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) at Madurai for treatment. As many as 930 ferocious bulls brought from various districts across Tamil Nadu and 450 tamers participated in the event. At the end of 10th and final round, a bull owned by Vijaya Thangapadi was awarded a Tractor as prize on behalf of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin under the best performing bull category, while Parthiban of Natham in Dindigul district, who tamed 14 bulls was emerged as the best bull tamer and he was presented with a luxury car for his valour on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Besides, gold and silver coins, cash prizes, bicycles, electronic devices and household articles were presented to the bull tamers and bull owners. Minister for Commercial Taxes P.Moorthy and Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services P.T.R.Palanivel Thiaga Rajan handed over the prizes to the winners, this evening.
